Ready-to-Use Coaching Agreement Template for Clients
A coaching agreement template helps coaches and clients set clear expectations before sessions begin. It records the scope of services, fees, timing, confidentiality, cancellation terms, and responsibilities of each party. This ready-to-use model can be adapted for individual, career, executive, wellness, or business coaching arrangements.
A coaching agreement creates a clear written framework for the professional relationship between a coach and a client. It helps both parties understand the purpose of the coaching, the planned services, payment arrangements, and the boundaries of the engagement. A well-drafted agreement can reduce misunderstandings and support a more focused, productive coaching process. This template is suitable for many forms of coaching, including career, executive, business, wellness, and personal development coaching.
What a Coaching Agreement Should Cover
The agreement should identify the coach and client, describe the coaching package, and state how and when sessions will take place. It should also clarify that coaching is a collaborative professional service rather than therapy, medical treatment, legal advice, or a guaranteed outcome.
Clear terms give the client enough information to make an informed decision and allow the coach to manage the engagement consistently. The scope should be specific enough to explain the service while retaining flexibility for the client’s changing goals.
Scope and Nature of Coaching
Describe the general subject of the coaching, such as leadership development, career planning, business goals, or personal organisation. State that the client remains responsible for their decisions, actions, and results arising from the coaching relationship.
Key Details to Include
Use the following fields to ensure the essential commercial and practical details are recorded. Completing these items before the first session makes it easier to avoid confusion later.
| Document field | Purpose | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Coaching services | Defines the type and scope of support | Using vague descriptions with no stated boundaries |
| Session schedule | Records frequency, duration, and delivery method | Failing to address online sessions or time zones |
| Fees and payment | Sets the price, due date, and payment method | Not stating whether fees are refundable |
| Cancellation policy | Explains notice requirements and missed-session terms | Leaving late cancellation consequences unclear |
| Confidentiality | Protects information shared during coaching | Promising absolute confidentiality without legal exceptions |
Confidentiality and Professional Boundaries
Coaching conversations are normally confidential, subject to applicable law and limited exceptions such as a valid legal requirement or a serious concern about safety. The agreement should explain these limits in plain language and state how records, notes, and communications will be handled.
Important Limits of the Service
Coaching is not a substitute for mental health care, medical care, legal advice, financial advice, or other regulated professional services. If an issue falls outside the coach’s competence, the client may need to seek support from a suitably qualified professional.
Use plain, specific language for fees, cancellations, and confidentiality: these are the clauses most likely to prevent disputes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a coaching agreement legally binding?
It may form a binding contract when it contains clear terms, mutual agreement, and any other requirements that apply in the relevant jurisdiction. Its enforceability depends on the wording, the circumstances, and local law.
Can a client cancel a coaching agreement?
Yes, if the agreement allows cancellation or termination under its stated terms. Consumer protection rules may also provide cancellation rights in some situations, depending on the country and how the agreement was made.
Should the agreement include a results guarantee?
No. Coaching outcomes depend substantially on the client’s participation, choices, and circumstances. The agreement should describe the service but avoid guarantees of specific personal, professional, or financial results.
