Ready-to-Use Content Production Agreement Template
This ready-to-use content production agreement template helps clients and content producers define the scope of work, deliverables, deadlines, fees, revision limits, intellectual property rights, confidentiality, and termination terms. It can be adapted for writing, video, audio, photography, social media, and other commissioned content projects.
A content production agreement is a written contract between a client and a content producer who creates material such as articles, videos, photographs, podcasts, social media posts, or graphics. It establishes what will be created, when it must be delivered, and how much the producer will be paid. A clear agreement also reduces misunderstandings about revisions, approvals, and ownership of the finished work. This template is designed as a practical starting point for service-based content projects.
What a Content Production Agreement Covers
The agreement should identify both parties and describe the content services in enough detail that the expected result can be understood without relying on informal messages. It should also state the project schedule, delivery format, payment method, and any approval process.
Content can be commissioned for a single assignment, an ongoing campaign, or a fixed monthly retainer. The contract should match that arrangement and distinguish between one-off deliverables and recurring work.
Scope of Services
The scope should specify the type, quantity, format, platform, length, technical requirements, and intended purpose of each deliverable. Vague descriptions such as “marketing content” can lead to disputes if the parties have different expectations.
Essential Terms to Include
Every content project has practical variables that should be recorded in writing. The following table highlights common fields and the mistakes that often cause later problems.
| Document field | Purpose | Common error |
|---|---|---|
| Deliverables | Defines the exact content to be produced | Using broad descriptions without quantities or formats |
| Deadline | Sets dates for drafts and final delivery | Not stating whether client feedback extends the schedule |
| Fee and payment | States price, invoicing, taxes, and due dates | Omitting late-payment terms or expense rules |
| Revisions | Sets the number and scope of included changes | Allowing unlimited revisions without extra charges |
| Ownership rights | Explains who may use, edit, and publish the work | Failing to state when rights transfer |
Intellectual Property and Usage Rights
Copyright and other intellectual property rights should be addressed expressly. The parties may agree on an assignment of rights, a limited licence, or a licence that applies only after full payment has been received.
Pre-Existing Materials
The producer should retain ownership of tools, templates, methods, stock assets, and other material created before the project unless the agreement says otherwise. The client should confirm that any material it provides may legally be used in the commissioned content.
- Identify the final deliverables and their formats.
- State whether source files are included.
- Define the territory, media, and duration of permitted use.
- Clarify whether the producer may display the work in a portfolio.
- Specify whether third-party licences or stock content are required.

Payment, Expenses, and Revisions
The payment clause should say whether the fee is fixed, hourly, per deliverable, or recurring. It should also state the deposit, invoice date, payment deadline, currency, applicable taxes, and consequences of late payment.
Revisions should be limited by number, timing, and scope. Requests that change the original brief, require additional deliverables, or arise after approval should normally be treated as additional paid work.
Before work begins, attach or write a detailed brief and obtain written approval from both parties; it is the simplest way to prevent scope creep.
How to Complete the Template
Complete every blank field before signing and attach a statement of work or project brief if the assignment includes several deliverables. Each party should keep a signed copy and retain written records of approvals, feedback, and changes.
- Identify the client and the content producer with their contact details.
- Describe the deliverables, technical requirements, and delivery dates.
- Agree on fees, expenses, payment dates, and revision limits.
- Review ownership, confidentiality, termination, and signature provisions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who owns the content after it is delivered?
Ownership depends on the contract. The agreement should clearly state whether rights are assigned to the client or licensed, and whether transfer happens only after payment in full.
Can the client request unlimited revisions?
Only if the contract expressly permits that arrangement. Most agreements set a defined number of revision rounds and charge separately for work outside the agreed scope.
Can either party end the agreement early?
Yes, if the termination clause permits it. The clause should explain the notice required, payment for completed work, return of materials, and treatment of unfinished deliverables.
