Ready-to-Use Commission Receipt Template for Payment Records

A commission receipt is a written record confirming that a person or business has received payment for commission earned through a sale, referral, agency arrangement, or other commercial activity. This ready-to-use template helps identify the parties, define the transaction, state the gross amount and deductions, and provide signed proof of payment.

A commission receipt records the payment of compensation earned by an agent, salesperson, broker, representative, or other recipient under a commission arrangement. It provides practical evidence that a stated amount has been paid and received for a defined transaction or period. A well-prepared receipt can reduce misunderstandings about the calculation, payment date, deductions, and scope of the commission. This template is useful for businesses and independent professionals who need a clear written payment record.

What a commission receipt is for

A commission receipt is generally issued by the recipient after receiving payment, although parties may agree on a different internal process. It should connect the payment to the relevant agreement, sale, referral, client account, invoice, or reporting period.

The receipt is not necessarily a substitute for an invoice, payroll record, tax filing, or underlying commission agreement. Its primary purpose is to acknowledge payment and document the essential details of the transaction.

Common situations where it is used

It may be used for sales commissions, real estate referrals, broker fees, affiliate arrangements, collection incentives, recruitment fees, and agency services. The wording should match the actual commercial relationship and applicable legal and tax requirements.

Essential information to include

The document should identify both the payer and the recipient in sufficient detail to avoid uncertainty. Include the date, place, reference number where relevant, payment method, and a clear description of the commission being paid.

Document fieldPurposeFrequent error

Gross commission amountShows the amount earned before deductionsLeaving the currency unspecified
Deductions and net amountExplains withholdings and actual amount receivedRecording only the net payment
Payment method and dateProvides evidence of how and when payment occurredOmitting transfer reference or cheque number

How to calculate and describe the payment

State whether the commission is a percentage, fixed fee, tiered amount, or another agreed calculation method. Where the figure depends on sales or collections, identify the applicable base amount and period so that the calculation can be reviewed.

Gross amount, deductions, and net amount

Separating the gross commission from deductions improves transparency. Deductions may include tax withholding, advances, chargebacks, adjustments, or other amounts permitted by the relevant agreement and law.

  • Name and contact details of the payer.
  • Name and identification details of the commission recipient.
  • Description of the sale, referral, service, or period covered.
  • Gross commission, deductions, and net amount paid.
  • Payment date, method, and transaction reference.

Steps for completing the receipt

Complete the receipt only after checking the underlying commission calculation and payment information. Keep a copy with the supporting agreement, sales report, invoice, bank confirmation, or accounting records.

  1. Identify the payer, recipient, and the relevant commission agreement or transaction.
  2. Enter the gross commission and list each deduction separately.
  3. Confirm the net amount, currency, payment method, date, and reference number.
  4. Have the recipient sign and retain copies for both parties.

Practical recommendation: write monetary amounts in both figures and words, and attach or reference the calculation statement when the payment covers multiple transactions.

Good record-keeping practices

Number receipts sequentially when issuing them regularly, and use the same reference in accounting records. Electronic signatures and electronic copies may be acceptable in some circumstances, but parties should verify the rules that apply to their jurisdiction and business relationship.

Do not alter a signed receipt without a clear written correction. If an error is found, issue a corrected receipt or a separate adjustment record that identifies the original document.

Frequently asked questions

Does a commission receipt prove that the commission was correctly calculated?

It proves that the stated amount was acknowledged as received, but it may not by itself prove the calculation was correct. Supporting reports, agreements, invoices, and transaction records are important evidence.

Should tax be shown on the receipt?

Where tax, withholding, or other mandatory deductions apply, they should usually be shown clearly. The correct treatment depends on the recipient’s status, the type of payment, and local law.

Can a business issue the receipt instead of the recipient?

A business can prepare a payment record, but the strongest acknowledgement of receipt is normally signed or otherwise accepted by the person or entity that received the money.
